I attached a long arm to the gear’s output so that a small angular movement produced a more visible displacement at the end of the arm. It gave the client a straightforward way to observe the movement from each step of the motor.

A client wanted to see how small a movement they could obtain from a stepper motor. I milled this housing to hold the motor, worm gear, and supporting parts rigidly while observing the output movement from individual steps. This view shows how the assembly fits together. The construction was probably more substantial than the experiment needed, but minimizing unwanted movement was my main concern.

A contracted project investigating how precisely a stepper motor could move. I built this test fixture to measure the motion produced by individual motor steps. I no longer recall the exact gearing used in the setup.

Another view of the stepper-motor test rig, showing the motor and measurement arrangement. This was part of contract work investigating movement per step.

A further view of the fixture used to investigate stepper-motor motion, including its mechanical arrangement and wiring. The project focused on measuring individual steps.
